Old Glory cocktail recipe

Erica Sagon

Looking for that perfect cocktail to serve on the 4th of July? Or any summer weekend, really? It doesn't get much easier — or prettier — than this Old Glory, made with Cardinal Spirits Vodka, muddled berries and coconut water.

With such light, fresh flavors, a top-notch vodka is key. Our vodka makes this cocktail. It's some of the smoothest vodka around - many people have told us it's the only vodka they'll drink straight.

It's not your average tasteless, odorless vodka. It has character by design. A very light entry with a bright floral finish. We ferment and distill it on site from white grape, and the some of the fruity aroma and flavor intentionally remain in the spirit.

OLD GLORY

By Stella Snyder of Cardinal Spirits

Makes 1 cocktail

4 raspberries
6 blueberries, plus more for garnish
.5 ounce simple syrup
.5 ounce fresh lemon juice
1.5 ounces Cardinal Spirits Vodka
2 ounces coconut water

Muddle raspberries, blueberries, simple syrup and lemon juice together in a mason jar or large rocks glass. Fill glass with ice, then add Cardinal Spirits Vodka and coconut water. Stir gently, then garnish with a skewer of blueberries.

Night Swim cocktail recipe

Erica Sagon

One of our favorite cocktails this summer has been a rum Old Fashioned made with our Lake House Spiced Rum. This version by our bartender Kevin Hinkle combines our spiced rum with our White Oak Whiskey for a one-of-a-kind twist on an Old Fashioned.

NIGHT SWIM

By Kevin Hinkle of Cardinal Spirits

1 ounce Cardinal Spirits Lake House Spiced Rum
3/4 ounce Cardinal Spirits White Oak Whiskey
1/4 ounce vanilla demerara syrup (recipe follows)
2 dashes aromatic bitters
1 orange wheel, for garnish

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass or tin, then add ice. Stir several times to chill and dilute the cocktail. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice, then garnish with an orange wheel.

To make vanilla demerara syrup: Combine 1 cup water and 2 cups turbinado sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, and stir until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat. Split 1 vanilla bean and add it to the saucepan. Let the syrup cool completely, then remove the vanilla bean.

Bramble Mule cocktail recipe

Erica Sagon

Bramble Mule is, without a doubt, the cocktail of the summer. This easy three-ingredient cooler is a twist on a Moscow Mule. Instead of regular vodka, we use our Bramble Black Raspberry Vodka, a flavorful spirit infused with whole black raspberries and hibiscus.

Lush black raspberry vodka meets zippy ginger beer and tart lime in a cold copper mug — when you make them with friends, you'll feel like you've nailed the whole easy, breezy summer entertaining thing.

Bramble Mules are a best-seller at the distillery, and here's how to make one at home:

BRAMBLE MULE

1.5 ounces Cardinal Spirits Bramble
1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
Ginger beer, to taste
Lime wedge, for garnish

Add vodka and lime juice to a copper mug, then fill with ice. Fill with ginger beer and garnish with lime wedge.

What do you do if you love cocktail lounges, but you can't find a good one in your city? If you're Aaron Morales, you open one yourself. That's the short story behind Morales' Agave Vintage Cocktails in downtown Terre Haute.

Agave Vintage serves Prohibition-era cocktails in an intimate bar filled with local art, and outside on a roomy patio. It is one of the wonderful establishments that serves Cardinal Spirits in cocktails like the Champagne Cosmopolitan (Cardinal Spirits Vodka, champagne, cranberry, lemon and lime juices, and house-made grenadine) and Caramel Apple Martini (Cardinal Spirits Vodka, apple and butterscotch liqueurs, and house made caramel).

“It's bigger than just slinging booze,” says Morales, a professor, novelist, and founder of Agave Vintage Cocktails. He sees the education and betterment of spirits and cocktails in his community as his paramount ambition. “It’s not just drinking responsibly, but drinking well."

Cheers to that. We chatted with Aaron about filling the cocktail void in Terre Haute:

CARDINAL: What was the inspiration for founding Agave?

AARON: The idea came from book tours where I would travel to major cities, and I always had a passion for cocktails. When my fiancé and I went out for dinner (locally) there was no place to find a nice cocktail, and I thought, why don’t we open a nice cocktail lounge in Terre Haute? Pulling from influences of different cocktail lounges I had seen throughout the country, particularly in Chicago and New York.

CARDINAL: What's the philosophy behind your bar?

AARON: To create a new, upscale place that uses high quality spirits, fresh ingredients, and reintroduces tequila as something you can actually enjoy, not have a bad experience with. People are used to shots and used to margaritas and almost always those are painful experiences. Enjoyment and education. We refuse to let people suffer through their drinks. We’ll take it back and get some different.

CARDINAL: Your bar is filled with artwork. What’s the relationship between art and Agave Vintage?

AARON: We make a point of supporting local art in general, partnering with community theater, with Wabash Valley Arts Spaces, Symphony Orchestra, and Swope Art Museum. Our bar is built by Mark Nicklasch, a local metal sculptor. We want to generate interest in the arts and pair the younger professional culture that is starting to move to Terre Haute.

CARDINAL: A handful of drinks on your menu are made with Cardinal Spirits. What do you like about the products?

AARON: What I love about Cardinal Spirits is the attention to the subtle details fresh ingredients will bring out. The reason a lot of people bury spirits in Coke or mixers is because the spirits themselves don’t really warrant paying attention to. I think that Cardinal has done a good job making sure their spirits are sophisticated enough that a lot can be done with them or they can just be enjoyed straight. Cardinal and us are kindred spirits in a way because we started at the same time and we are both supportive of our local communities.
